INTRODUCTION
Welcome to the 50th Anniversary of leadership by our Greek School Director, Mrs. Dawn (Avgi) Anagnos! Greek School is the Modern Greek Language education program of the Cathedral and is registered through the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America’s Department of Greek Education. Greek School offers educational and lifetime enrichment through developing vocabulary and confidence in Greek Language speaking and writing skills. Through a solid foundation with the Greek Language, every student, youth and adult, will benefit from his or her further education or life pursuits.
Do you have a desire to learn Modern Greek? Are you traveling to Greece and desire to speak the language and read the signage? Do you have Greek-speaking relatives with whom you desire to call, email or correspond? Do you desire to understand the Greek portions of the Divine Liturgy better or to recite the Lord’s Prayer and Creed in Greek? Do you simply have an interest in Greece and Cyprus and wish to learn more? Then Greek School is for you!
Greek School encompasses not only Modern Greek Language instruction and conversation, but also includes instruction in the geography, history, religion, literature, art, mythology, songs, costumes, customs, and traditions of Greece and Cyprus.
Greek School is open to everyone, and many learners reside across the United States. You do not need to be a church member to register for Greek School. There is a level of teaching for every youth and adult student.

SCHEDULE & CALENDAR
For the greatest scheduling flexibility and access by distance learners, lessons are taught online via the Zoom platform. Three 40-minute sessions are scheduled for Saturdays from September 16, 2023, to May 18, 2024, and five 40-minute sessions are scheduled for Wednesdays from September 20, 2023, to May 15, 2024. Additional class sessions are added as needed. Additional in-person Youth Classes may be added as demand and availability allow.

ACTIVITIES
CELEBRATIONS
Three celebrations led by Greek School students are held annually for the community, including speeches, poems, songs, and National Anthems:
OXI! Day – October 28, celebrating Greece’s “No!” message on October 28, 1940 to Mussolini’s occupancy ultimatum. The celebrations held on October 25, 2020, October 31, 2021, and on October 30, 2022, are available to view through the church’s YouTube channel.
Greek Letters Day – January 30, celebrating the Three Hierarchs of the Orthodox Church — St. Basil the Great, St. Gregory the Theologian, and St. John Chrysostom — who developed Greek language education to teach Christ’s message. The celebrations held on January 31, 2021, January 30, 2022, and on January 29, 2023, are available to view through the church’s YouTube channel.
Greek Independence Day – March 25, celebrating the Greek revolt on March 25, 1821 from the Ottoman Empire leading to independence. The celebrations held on March 28, 2021, March 27, 2022, and March 26, 2023, are available to view through the church’s YouTube channel.
GREEK-AMERICAN FESTIVAL
For decades Greek School and its students have shared the Greek Language at the annual Greek-American Festival through the Greek Language Booth and the Greek Language Presentations. Registration information with QR code is posted in the lobby.
DETROIT GREEKTOWN PARADE
For many years our Greek School proudly marched with the Metropolis Greek Schools in the annual Detroit Greektown Parade celebrating Greek Independence Day.
ELLINOMATHEIA
Our Greek School is proud some students have successfully completed the advancing levels of the ΕΛΛΗΝΟΜΑΘΕΙΑ (ELLINOMATHEIA), the Greek Language Proficiency Exam of the Ministry of Education of Greece in an annual, world-wide exam administered by the Center for Greek Language in Thessaloniki, Greece. Ellinomatheia Certificates are achievements recognized by secondary and post-secondary education institutions throughout the world. Μπράβο!
GRADUATION AND CERTIFICATE PRESENTATIONS
One highlight of every year is the awarding of Certificates (Ενδεικτικά) to all Greek School students at the annual Graduate Sunday celebration. These Certificates reflect a student’s participation in the Greek School curriculum and advancement towards the ultimate goal of graduation. Upon graduation, the student is awarded a Diploma (Απολυτήριο). The celebrations held on May 16, 2021, May 15, 2022, and May 14, 2023 are available to view through the church’s YouTube channel.
TUITION
Tuition costs are very reasonable. For stewards of the Cathedral, there is no cost. For all others, the cost for a full-year of instruction, from September through May, is only $100 per person. There are also discounts for families. Tuition is collected by the Cathedral church office prior to the start of classes. DIRECTOR – DAWN (AVGI) ANAGNOS
Since 1974, Greek School Director Dawn Anagnos has taught generations of youth and adults the beautiful Modern Greek Language and all of the Greek School subjects. She is an adept teacher who achieves results by working with the students at their level. Students love learning from Κυρία Αυγή! Director Anagnos has been honored to represent our Greek School and the Detroit Metropolis Greek Schools at teacher seminars in Greece and Cyprus. She regularly attends continuing education seminars sponsored by the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America’s Department of Greek Education and by the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Detroit.
